Products of the Hive
Honey bees are often called “nature’s chemists” because of the diverse range of substances they produce. While we are most familiar with honey, their other products are equally remarkable for their industrial and medicinal uses.
Primary Bee Products
- Honey: Produced from nectar that bees collect, enzymatically transform, and dehydrate. It serves as their primary carbohydrate source.
- Beeswax: Secreted from specialized glands on the abdomen of young worker bees. It is used to build the structural foundation (comb) of the hive.
- Propolis: A resinous mixture of tree sap and beeswax used to seal gaps, sanitize the hive, and mummify intruders.
- Royal Jelly: A nutrient-rich, milky secretion used to feed larvae and the sole diet of the Queen bee.
- Bee Pollen: Foraged flower pollen packed into “baskets” on their legs and mixed with nectar. It is the colony’s primary source of protein and minerals.
- Bee Bread: A fermented mixture of bee pollen, honey, and enzymes stored in the comb. This is the bees’ shelf-stable food source.
- Bee Venom (Apitoxin): Produced in the venom gland and delivered via the stinger; it is widely researched for its anti-inflammatory properties.
